Support the creation of a pilot network of hospitals related to payment of care for cross-border patients

Patient mobility across borders is not a new phenomenon. On the contrary, the number of EU citizens who decide to seek healthcare in a Member State other than the Member State of affiliation has been steadily raising.

The HoNCAB project launched in September 2012 with the aim of understanding the financial and organisational requirements that arise during the implementation of the directive on the application of patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare, thus preparing hospitals for the new application conditions.

The project also set up a pilot network of hospitals, the Hospital Network for Care Across Borders in Europe. The network brought together hospitals interested in sharing experiences and good practices but also critical issues and possible solutions when providing care to cross-border patients.

HoNCAB ended in 2016.
